If you run a restaurant or hotel kitchen in the UAE, you may have heard your exhaust equipment called an ecology unit or an ecology system. This guide explains what it is, what is inside it, why it needs cleaning, and what the cleaning involves.
What is an ecology unit?
An ecology unit is a kitchen exhaust treatment unit. It cleans smoke and grease particles out of the exhaust air before the air is released outside. Many are built around an electrostatic precipitator (ESP), which uses charged plates to capture fine grease particles, so the names ESP unit and ecology unit are often used for the same equipment. Names vary between suppliers.
It is a separate part of the exhaust system. It does not replace the hood, the filters, the duct or the fan, and it is fitted in some commercial kitchens, not all of them.
What is inside an ecology unit?
- Pre-filters: mesh or baffle filters that catch the heaviest grease first
- ESP cells: the charged collector plates that capture smoke and fine grease particles
- A carbon filter, in many units: activated carbon that reduces cooking odours
- A housing with controls that holds the stages and powers the cells
Layouts differ between makes and models, so check your own unit's manual for its exact stages.
Why does an ecology unit need cleaning?
Everything the unit captures stays inside it. Grease builds up on the pre-filters and the collector cells, and the carbon fills up over time. A loaded unit captures less, so smoke and odours start to get through, and grease left on the cells is still grease in your exhaust path.
ESP cells run on high voltage, so the unit must be isolated from power before anyone opens it. That is one reason the cleaning belongs to trained technicians and not to the daily kitchen routine.
Signs an ecology unit needs cleaning
- A visible grease film on the collector plates
- Smoke or odour at the exhaust discharge that was not there before
- Cooking odours getting past the carbon filter
- Cleaning is overdue under the manufacturer's recommended interval
How often should an ecology unit be cleaned?
Follow the unit manufacturer's recommended interval. Kitchens with fryers and grills load the plates faster, so check the interval against how you cook. The rest of the system has its own schedule; see how often to clean a commercial kitchen exhaust.
What does ecology unit cleaning involve?
We clean the collector cells, the housing and the pre-filters, where fitted, and we can restore the activated carbon granules in carbon filters. At the inspection we check each filter and tell you what can be restored and what should be replaced. The details are on our ESP and ecology unit cleaning page.
Cleaning the duct does not clean the unit, and cleaning the unit does not clean the duct. Our complete exhaust system cleaning covers the hood, filters, duct, ESP or ecology unit where fitted, and the fan in one visit, and every job ends with a company-attested report that includes before and after photos and recommendations.
How do you know if your kitchen has one?
Not every kitchen does. Check the kitchen's equipment list or maintenance manual, or ask the contractor who installed the ventilation. If you are still not sure, we can tell you when we inspect the system. For what a full cleaning includes, read what is included in a hood cleaning service.
Need your ecology unit cleaned, or not sure whether you have one? Contact HoodEx and we will arrange an inspection. We work day and night shifts, so a visit can be arranged outside your trading hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is an ecology filter?
The filters in an ecology unit are the pre-filters and, in many units, a carbon filter. We clean the pre-filters and can restore the activated carbon granules. At the inspection we check each filter and tell you what can be restored and what should be replaced.
Is an ecology unit the same as an ESP unit?
Often, yes. Many ecology units are built around an electrostatic precipitator, so the two names are commonly used for the same equipment. Some units also include pre-filters and a carbon filter.
Does an ecology unit replace cleaning the duct?
No. The unit treats the air after the hood and filters. Grease still collects in the hood, the filters and the duct leading to the unit, so the whole system needs cleaning on its schedule.
Can the carbon in an ecology unit be cleaned?
We can restore the activated carbon granules in carbon filters. At the inspection we check the filter and tell you what can be restored and what should be replaced.
How often should an ecology unit be cleaned?
Follow the manufacturer's recommended interval. Kitchens with fryers and grills load the plates faster, so check the interval against how you cook.
