Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning vs Hood Cleaning: What's the Difference?

7 October 2026 · 4 min read

People often use "hood cleaning" and "kitchen exhaust cleaning" to mean the same thing. They are not the same job, and the difference affects how much grease stays in your system. Here is what each one covers and how to decide which you need.

Is kitchen exhaust cleaning the same as hood cleaning?

No. Hood cleaning covers the canopy above the cooking line and, usually, the filters. Kitchen exhaust cleaning covers the whole path the air and grease take out of the building: the hood, filters, duct, fan and any ESP unit.

What does hood cleaning cover?

Hood cleaning deals with the part you can see from the kitchen floor: the canopy interior and exterior surfaces, the grease channels and the capture edges. It gives the kitchen a visibly clean, hygienic surface and helps the hood capture cooking emissions properly.

Providers differ on whether filters are included, so check the quote. At HoodEx, kitchen hood cleaning covers the canopy and exhaust filter cleaning covers the filters. Both are part of the complete system service.

What does kitchen exhaust cleaning cover?

Kitchen exhaust cleaning treats the hood, filters, duct, fan and ESP unit as one connected system:

  • Hood: canopy interior and exterior, grease channels and capture edges
  • Filters: baffle or mesh panels degreased, descaled and dried
  • Duct: full internal runs, including sections that need mechanical brush access
  • Exhaust fan: blades, housing and motor compartment
  • ESP unit: collector cells and housing, where one is fitted

At HoodEx this is the complete exhaust system cleaning service, done in one coordinated visit.

Why does the difference matter?

Grease does not stop at the hood. It passes the filters and collects in the duct and on the fan, where you cannot see it. A hood-only clean leaves that grease behind, so the system can look clean while most of the buildup is still there.

Grease buildup in a duct is a fire risk and can reduce airflow. That is why the common NFPA 96 benchmark sets cleaning intervals for the whole exhaust system, from monthly for solid-fuel cooking to yearly for low-volume kitchens, not just the hood.

Which one does your kitchen need?

If you cook with fryers, grills or woks, or your kitchen runs for long hours, the complete system is the safer choice, because more grease reaches the duct and fan. If you are unsure what is in your system, start with an inspection. We look at the system first and recommend only what it needs.

A range hood in a villa or apartment is different again. Some range hoods vent through a duct, and others recirculate air through a filter instead. If yours vents through a duct, grease can collect there too. If it recirculates, the filters are the main part to look after.

How can you tell what a quote covers?

  1. Look for the parts listed: canopy, filters, duct, fan and ESP unit.
  2. Ask how the duct will be cleaned and whether the whole run is covered.
  3. Ask what you will receive when the work is done.
  4. If the quote only says "hood cleaning", ask whether the duct and fan are included.

Frequently asked questions

Is hood cleaning enough?

For the surfaces you can see, a hood clean helps. But grease also collects in the duct and fan, and a hood-only clean leaves that behind.

Do I need to book hood cleaning and exhaust cleaning separately?

No. The complete exhaust system service already includes the hood, so you book it once. Each part can also be booked on its own.

Does a residential range hood need exhaust cleaning?

It depends on the hood. If it vents through a duct, grease can collect in the duct as well as the hood. Some range hoods recirculate air through a filter instead, and for those the filters are the main part to look after.

How do I know which one I have been quoted?

Ask which parts are included. A quote that lists only the hood, and perhaps the filters, is a hood cleaning. A quote that also lists the duct, fan and any ESP unit is a kitchen exhaust cleaning.
